A practical file workflow

Pick an image format by checking the image and its destination.

There is no reliable smallest-format winner for every file. Use the same source and dimensions, then compare visible detail, transparency, compatibility, and actual size.

Match the format to the content

JPEG is commonly useful for photographs when a lossy result is acceptable. PNG is useful for precise graphics or a transparent background. WebP supports transparency and different encoding modes, but the browser tool’s available output and the receiving service must both support the chosen format.

These are starting points, not promises about your result. A photograph with grain, a flat logo, and a screenshot full of small text should be evaluated separately. Do not convert an important original just because another format is newer.

Run a fair comparison

The tool reports real output bytes, so you can test your own image instead of relying on a made-up benchmark table.

  1. Open one still image in the image compressor and keep the output dimensions fixed.
  2. Export each available format separately. For a quality control, record the setting used rather than assuming equal numbers mean equal visual quality.
  3. Check sharp text and edges at normal viewing size. Inspect a transparent area against the preview background.
  4. Compare the reported size and open the saved file in its destination app or website.
  5. Choose the smallest result that still works for that task; keep the original for future edits.

Check conversion side effects

JPEG does not preserve transparency. If your image needs a cutout background, avoid converting it to JPEG and check the actual preview before downloading.

This browser tool handles still images. It is not an animated WebP or GIF conversion tool, and it does not preserve every property of a source file. If you need exact metadata, print color management, or archival fidelity, keep the source and use a workflow designed for those requirements.

When you need an app

Prepare one picture, or organize a photo library.

This tool prepares a selected file. For duplicate review, similar pictures, and photo categories, explore AI Cleaning. For dual-camera capture and creation, explore TwoPic. The webpage does not scan your photo library.
