Free cycling calculator

Work out cycling speed, distance or time.

Enter two known values to calculate the third. Choose kilometres or miles, then add planned breaks separately to see the whole trip duration and overall average speed.

Calculate ride speed, time or distance

Calculations stay in this browser. No account or location access is needed.

Moving time (exclude stops)

Stops are added to moving time to find total elapsed time. Leave this at 0 if you have no stops.

Limits: distance above 0 and up to 10,000 km; speed above 0 and up to 300 km/h (equivalent limits in miles). Moving time: 1 second to 1,000 hours. Stops: 0–10,000 minutes. Hours, minutes and seconds must be whole numbers; minutes and seconds must be 0–59.

Choose what to calculate, then enter the two known values.

These are arithmetic estimates using a constant average speed. Hills, wind, traffic and changes in pace affect a real ride. This tool does not record a GPS route or predict a finish time.

How to use it

Keep moving time and breaks separate, with matching units.

Average speed = distance ÷ time; moving time = distance ÷ moving average speed; distance = moving average speed × moving time. The formulas use hours; the form accepts hours, minutes and seconds. Breaks affect total duration and overall average only.

The estimate depends on your assumptions; it does not model roads, gradients or traffic. Inputs and results are calculated in this browser, without saving or uploading the numerical values. Website analytics can record the tool, mode and unit.

  1. Choose speed, time or distance, then choose kilometres or miles.

  2. Enter the other two known quantities. Time fields are moving time; minutes and seconds run from 0 to 59.

  3. Add optional break minutes, calculate, and compare moving and total results.

  4. Recalculate after editing an assumption, or use the example to check the formulas. Changing units converts the same trip.

Common questions

Know what the tool can and cannot do.

Which time should I enter for average speed?

Enter moving time: the time spent riding, excluding stops. Add stops separately in break minutes. Moving average is distance divided by moving time; overall average uses moving time plus breaks.

How are miles converted to kilometres?

The calculator uses the international mile: 1 mile equals exactly 1.609344 kilometres. Switching units converts distance and speed together without changing the trip. Displayed values are rounded; calculations use the retained precision.

Can this predict my exact arrival time?

No. Time equals distance divided by the average speed you enter, with optional breaks added afterward. Road conditions, traffic, climbing and changes of pace can change your actual result. Compare several assumptions when planning.

Does this record a ride or request location?

No. This is a local arithmetic calculator. It does not record a GPS route, measure speed, read Apple Health or write a ride to HappyRide. Follow the HappyRide product link for the app’s recording workflow.

Are the numbers I enter saved or uploaded?

The calculator works in the current browser and does not save or upload your distance, speed, ride time or break values. Website analytics may record the tool, calculation mode and selected unit, without these numerical inputs or results.

Why is an input or result rejected?

Known distance, speed and moving time must be positive and inside the ranges shown in the calculator. Time fields use whole hours, minutes and seconds, with minutes and seconds from 0 to 59. Breaks can be zero. Moving time under one second or other out-of-range results are rejected; very small positive distance or speed values are labelled below 0.01 rather than displayed as zero.

When you need an app

Compare your estimate with a recorded ride.

The calculator uses the distance, time and speed you enter. For actual iPhone ride recording, explore HappyRide’s automatic tracking workflow, then compare values using the same time definition. Check the current product and App Store pages for features, price and device requirements.
